the Best Things to Do in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is a city that I definitely enjoyed exploring. From its ancient heart to its modern, creative hubs, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a curated list of must-do activities:

  • Explore the Old Town (Dzveli Tbilisi): This is where your Tbilisi adventure begins. Wander the cobblestone streets, admire the traditional wooden balconies, and soak in the atmosphere. Don’t miss the Sulfur Baths (Abanotubani), where you can indulge in a traditional bathing experience (from $24-52 USD for a private room including a kisi scrub. I enjoyed having my own private room, drinking a glass of wine and then getting scrubbed down by a local Georgian woman. It’s the definition of luxury. Pro-tip, I highly recommend booking your room days in advance online like I did at Chreli-Abano.
  • Ride the Narikala Fortress Aerial Tramway: Ascend to the ancient Narikala Fortress for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The tramway itself is an attraction, consistently rated highly by visitors.
  • Marvel at the Bridge of Peace: This modern architectural marvel is a stunning contrast to Tbilisi’s historical backdrop. It’s a perfect spot for an evening stroll and some Instagram-worthy photos.
  • Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba): This colossal cathedral is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world and a testament to modern Georgian religious architecture.
  • Experience the Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theater: Prepare to be enchanted by this internationally acclaimed puppet theater. It’s a truly unique and unforgettable cultural experience.
  • Get Lost in Fabrika: Housed in a former Soviet sewing factory, Fabrika is a vibrant multipurpose hub with hostels, cafes, restaurants, bars, and boutiques. It’s the epitome of “Tbilisi Cool”.
  • Discover the Chronicles of Georgia: Located outside the city center, these colossal columns depict key moments in Georgian history. It’s an awe-inspiring sight.

Where to Stay in Tbilisi

Choosing the right neighborhood can significantly impact your Tbilisi experience. Each district offers a unique vibe and caters to different travel styles.

  • Old Town (Kala): Perfect for first-time visitors seeking historical immersion. Expect charming boutique hotels and budget-friendly hostels. Be aware that it can get crowded.
  • Sololaki: A more elegant and sophisticated neighborhood with upscale dining options. Ideal for those seeking a refined atmosphere.
  • Vera: The go-to neighborhood for digital nomads and creative professionals. Home to specialty cafes, wine bars, and coworking spaces. Stamba Hotel and Rooms Hotel are design-forward options. This area was a total vibe that I highly recommend. Stamba had a great on-site restaurant and outdoor seating area to just chill and enjoy with friends.
  • Chugureti: The bohemian heart of Tbilisi, centered around Fabrika. Offers excellent value for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Vake & Saburtalo: Vake offers upscale residential living, while Saburtalo provides budget-friendly options for extended stays.

What to Eat in Tbilisi

Georgian cuisine is a culinary adventure in itself. Prepare your taste buds for a symphony of flavors!

  • Khachapuri: The iconic cheese-filled bread. Try the Adjaruli Khachapuri – a boat-shaped bread filled with molten cheese, butter, and a raw egg. It may sound a bit strange but believe me it is quite tasty!
  • Khinkali: Georgia’s signature dumplings, filled with spiced meat, cheese, or vegetables. The cheese dumplings were certainly my favorite.
  • Mtsvadi: Georgian shashlik (barbecue).
  • Lobio: A hearty bean dish.
  • Churchkhela: A traditional candy made from grape juice and nuts.
  • Wine ice cream: I absolutely couldn’t get enough of it! So, so good.

Restaurant Recommendations:

  • Khinkali House: Known for consistently excellent Georgian food.
  • Honoré: Specializes in Georgian barbecue.
  • The King and the Bird: Offers creative variations on khinkali.
  • Craft Wine Restaurant: I enjoyed some of the best local bread here and natural wine.

Don’t Forget the Wine! Georgia claims to be the birthplace of wine, with an 8,000-year winemaking tradition. It’s the main reason why I just had to make a visit to this breathtaking country. I absolutely love having a wine-tasting experience.

Getting Around Tbilisi

Tbilisi’s transportation system is efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate.

  • Metro: The backbone of public transportation, with two intersecting lines connecting major districts.
  • Buses & Minibuses (Marshrutkas): Comprehensive coverage of areas not served by the metro [13]. Use Google Maps or the TTC app for route planning.
  • Unified Transport Card: Purchase a rechargeable card for easy payment on metros, buses, and minibuses.
  • Cable Cars & Funiculars: Provide both transportation and scenic views. The Rike Park to Narikala Fortress ropeway is a must-try.
  • Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Affordable and readily available.

Pro Tip: Download the TTC (Tbilisi Transit Card) mobile app for real-time bus tracking.

Best Day Trips from Tbilisi

Tbilisi’s strategic location makes it an ideal base for exploring the rest of Georgia.

  • Uplistsikhe & Gori: Explore the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe and the Stalin Museum in Gori.
  • Kakheti Wine Region: Visit traditional wineries and learn about qvevri wine production. I had a fantastic day out during a group tour booked through Viator. I highly recommend a day out here tasting local whites and my favorite, the red Saperavi wines.
  • Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): Witness the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek.
  • Borjomi: Relax in the spa town famous for its mineral water and thermal springs.
  • Mtskheta: Visit the ancient capital and spiritual heart of Georgia, home to UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Insider Tip: Consider a guided tour for a hassle-free day trip experience like I did booking with Viator for Uplistsikhe, Kakheti, and Mtskheta.
