The Best Things to Do in Cayuga County

By Nicole Brewer

Situated in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Cayuga County, New York, is a hidden gem full of history, natural beauty, and unique experiences. From historical sites that shaped a nation to scenic parks and my favorite a host of wineries, there’s something for every traveler. Check out my guide to the best things to do in Cayuga County globetrotters.

A Journey Through History: Harriet Tubman and the Equal Rights Movement

As many of you may already know, Cayuga County is an important location in the story of Harriet Tubman and the fight for equal rights. I was thrilled to learn so much about Harriet during this trip by making a visit to the Harriet Tubman National Historic Park. Other content creators and myself heard details about Mrs. Tubman’s life from Park Ranger Brittany Lane at A.M.E. Zion Church, which she helped establish and was a congregant for over 20 years.

Next, a visit to Harriet Tubman’s home in Auburn is a must, where she lived for more than 50 years. We met with Paul Carter, who’s unique blend of storytelling and facts about Harriet’s life I enjoyed immensely. During our tour we saw the Tubman Home for the Aged, the restored Tubman barn and the Harriet Tubman Residence. Finally, to complete your historical tour, you must pay your respects at Harriet Tubman’s final resting place at Fort Hill Cemetery. I tried my best to not be overcome with emotion having such a full circle moment on this trip.

For a broader understanding of the region’s impact on American history, you should explore the Equal Rights Heritage Center in Auburn. This center celebrates the trailblazers of the equal rights movement and highlights the rich history of the area. The goal is to Shine a Light on Auburn, which features Harriet’s likeness in the front of the center with a guiding (symbolic) light.

Wineries and Culinary Delights

The Finger Lakes region is famous for its wineries, and Cayuga County is no exception. We enjoyed a day out on Cayuga Lake having a wine-tasting adventure with Bianconi Tours, which offers curated experiences to local wineries. I also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to one of the stunning estates. Colloca Estate Winery in Fair Haven is a beautiful waterfront destination on Lake Ontario, offering tastings, events, Waterbike rides, and breathtaking views. There tasting rooms are open 7 days a week from 12-6pm with their onsite restaurants being open until 9pm from Wednesday-Sunday.

For a unique and rustic experience, consider a Lantern Walk with the Inns of Aurora. This guided evening walk through the charming village of Aurora offers a glimpse into its history and woodworking. We were able to experience using a saw and witnessed how to make the legs of a table and more. We then topped off the evening by having a lovely campfire where we roasted smores and had hot chocolate.

Outdoor Adventures and Nature

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore. The Sterling Nature Center is a paradise for birdwatchers and hikers, with over 1,400 acres of protected land along the shores of Lake Ontario. Its diverse environment makes it a perfect spot for spotting migratory birds and local wildlife. I enjoyed dipping my toes in the water overlooking the stunning views.

For a more challenging hike, head to Fillmore Glen State Park in Moravia. The park features a stunning gorge with five beautiful waterfalls, a winding trail along the gorge bed, and lush forest. It’s a great location for a day of hiking and enjoying a family picnic. The park is open daily from dawn to dusk, with special swimming hours from 11am – 7pm, daily during summers. It is recommended to contact the park office before your visit to confirm their hours due to weather.

If you’re looking for a different kind of outdoor activity, Southern Tier Stables offers horseback riding lessons and wagon trail rides, providing a unique way to explore the scenic countryside. We enjoyed sipping wine on the back of a tractor trailer, definitely a first for myself. The stables grounds also offers line-dancing to the tunes of Donna & the Mystics rocking country band!

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoor enthusiast, Cayuga County offers a range of experiences waiting to be discovered. I hope this post has inspired you to plan your trip today and uncover the magic of this incredible New York county. Is Cayuga County on your list to visit globetrotters?
